How Many Tons/Yards of Gravel Do You Need?

Estimating how much gravel or crushed stone you need requires determining your target area's total three-dimensional volume, converting that volume into cubic yards, and then translating it into weight (tons) based on your material's compaction and moisture density.

Quick Rule of Thumb: 1 cubic yard of standard aggregate weighs approximately 1.35 to 1.5 US tons (2,700 to 3,000 lbs) and covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep.

Step-by-Step Calculation Guide:

  1. Measure the Length and Width: Measure the perimeter of your driveway, pathway, or patio foundation in feet. For irregularly shaped areas, subdivide the space into rectangles or circles.
  2. Determine the Appropriate Depth: Measure your required depth in inches. As a general rule: walkways require 2 to 3 inches, landscape ground cover needs 2 to 3 inches, and vehicle driveways require 4 to 8 inches of gravel base and top layers.
  3. Calculate Cubic Feet: Multiply Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (converted to feet by dividing inches by 12).
